Freon R 404A Genetron Honeywell ::
Genetron 404A is a non-ozone depleting compound designed to serve as a long-term alternative to R-502 and R-22 in low- and medium-temperature commercial refrigeration systems. Applications where R-404A is a suitable refrigerant for retrofits or new installations include supermarket freezer cases, reach-in coolers, display cases, transport refrigeration, ice machines, and storage facilities.
Genetron 404A has been designed as a substitute for R-502, but it is not a drop-in replacement. Mineral oils and alkylbenzene lubricants, which have been used traditionally with R-502, are immiscible with Genetron 404A. Service technicians should consult the original equipment manufacturer for the recommended lubricants and retrofit guidelines. Genetron 404A is a blend of HFC-125, HFC-143a, and HFC-134a, and should always be charged in liquid phase.
Interim replacements for R-502 that may not require a full lubricant retrofit include:
- Genetron HP81 (R-402B)
- Genetron 408A (R-408A)
As an alternative to Genetron 404A in systems where the use of flooded evaporators may not allow for the use of a refrigerant with meaningful glide, bakeries and other facilities should use Genetron AZ-50 (R-507).
